Op vrijdag 25 en zaterdag 26 oktober 2019 vindt het jaarlijkse symposium van het NGE (Nederlands Genootschap voor Esthetica) plaats in Eindhoven. De organisatie van het symposium (NGE i.s.m. vakgroep Architecture, Urban Design and Engineering, TUe) vindt voor een deel plaats binnen de context van de Dutch Design Week (www.ddw.nl).
Paper presentaties
De kwaliteit van onze bebouwde omgeving moedigt aan tot levendig debat. En dat komt eenvoudigweg omdat alle gebruikers een direct belang hebben in die bebouwde omgeving. Zo hebben we allemaal een mening over de relatie tussen het oude en het nieuwe, over de relatie tussen innovatie en imitatie, over de welvoeglijkheid van schaal, materiaalgebruik en detail in een bepaalde context; over de ervaringsarmoede van de eindeloze herhaling of de banale willekeur van een diversiteit dat alleen zijn eigen doel lijkt te dienen, of over de aanmatigende macht impliciet in iedere bouwdaad, dat vaak sociale processen van gentrificatie en slummificatie op gang zet. Wellicht kan een rappel à l’ordre door de filosofische discipline van de esthetica helpen in de herijking van die meningen, en dan vooral bij hen die betrokken zijn bij de schepping van de bebouwde omgeving.
Met deze call for papers nodigen we geïnteresseerden uit om een bijdrage aan het symposium te leveren. Het symposium zal gericht zijn op de volgende vragen:
- Filosofische inzichten/vragen omtrent ontwerpend onderzoek in de architectuur en stedenbouw;
- De rol van kunstfilosofie/esthetica in het architectonisch ontwerponderwijs;
- De relatie tussen de praktijk van en de reflectie op het architectonisch ontwerpen.
Geïnteresseerden zijn daarnaast echter welkom om een abstract in te dienen over onderwerpen die buiten de thematiek van architectuur en stedelijke ontwikkeling vallen, maar relevant zijn voor hedendaagse discussies binnen de esthetica in het algemeen.
Papers kunnen naar keuze in het Engels of in het Nederlands worden gepresenteerd.
Indienen abstract
Stuur voor 15 juni 2019 een abstract van ± 500 woorden aan Niels van Poecke, bestuurslid NGE (vanpoecke@eshcc.eur.nl).
Kosten
De kosten voor deelname aan het symposium bedragen:
- voor leden van het NGE: gratis toegang
- voor niet-leden: € 50 (inclusief lidmaatschap NGE t/m 2020)
- voor studenten: € 20 (inclusief lidmaatschap NGE t/m 2020).
Aanmelden voor het symposium geschiedt door overmaking van het betreffende bedrag op rekening NL66INGB0006395303 t.n.v. het Ned. Genootschap voor Esthetica, onder vermelding van ‘deelname symposium 2019’. Bestaande leden (die dus geen bedrag hoeven over te maken) wordt verzocht een mailtje te sturen naar penningmeester@nge.nl met in de subjectregel ‘deelname symposium 2019’. Engelstalige papers kunnen (onafhankelijk van het symposium) ook ter beoordeling worden voorgelegd voor publicatie in het online open access tijdschrift van het NGE: Aesthetic Investigations (https://www.aestheticinvestigations.eu).

The problem of the building
NGE/DAA Symposium 25-26 October 2019, Eindhoven
On Friday 25 and Saturday 26 October, the yearly symposium of the NGE (Dutch Association for Aesthetics) will take place in Eindhoven. The symposium (organized by the NGE in cooperation with the department of Architecture, Urban Design and Engineering at the University of Technology, Eindhoven) will partly take place in the context of the Dutch Design Week (www.ddw.nl).
Paper presentations
The quality of our built environment tends to encourage lively debate. That is because all users of the built environment are direct stakeholders: we all have an opinion about the relationship between the old and the new, between innovation and imitation, regarding issues of scale, materialization, detail and their propriety when applied in a certain context, the experiential poverty of endless repetition or the arbitrary banality of diversity for its own sake, or indeed about the arrogating power implicit in any act of building, frequently unleashing painful social processes of gentrification and slummification. Perhaps a rappel à l’ordre by the discipline of aesthetics can help those involved in the creation of the built environment to recalibrate some of those opinions.
With this call for papers, you are invited to contribute to the symposium, which will focus on these issues:
- Philosophical questions concerning research by design;
- The role of aesthetics in architectural and urban design education;
- The relationship between the practice of and the reflection upon architecture and urban design.
Any contribution that lies outside of the theme of the symposium, yet is deemed relevant for discussions within contemporary aesthetics, is very much welcomed, as well.
Papers may be presented either in English or in Dutch.

- NGE members: free admittance
- Non-members: € 50 (including NGE membership through to 2020)
- Students: € 20 (including NGE membership through to 2020)
