The aim of this conference is twofold: on the one hand, to analyse the role of the aesthetic in the writings of Marx and, on the other, to examine works of art and literature which are based on, or have been directly inspired by, Marx’s writings. At the core of this conference, then, is an attempt to think the immanent relation between the aesthetic and emancipatory conceptions of politics.

The research project Artification and Its Impact on Art will arrange a three-day conference on the theme of artification.

The neologism artification refers to situations and processes in which something that is not regarded as art in the traditional sense of the word is changed into something art-like, art-related, or into something that takes influences from the arts. Often this means mixing art with non-art and creating new kinds of hybrids.

This conference explores the role of the moving and gesturing body in the imaginative perception of works of art. We welcome contributions by artistic and/or theoretical researchers in the areas of visual and audiovisual arts or in performance arts. Abstracts of lectures or of demonstrations of 300 words can be sent to helena.depreester@hogent.be. Please use word-format (doc or docx) and mention title, author(s), affiliation and email address.

Papers or demonstrations should be suitable for a 20-minute presentation in English. Visual and audiovisual presentations (screening or sound) are possible. The deadline for submissions is the 1st of September 2011.

‘Interdisciplinary Methodology: The Case of Comics Studies’ is a workshop on the topic of methodology in comics. It is to take place on Friday 14 – Saturday 15 October 2011 at the University of Bern.
